PLOT SUMMARY:
In chapter 8, numerous events occur. First of all, Maycomb County experiences the coldest weather since 1885 for two weeks, autumn turning into winter like miracle.
Snow comes falling down, which are so rare school closes the following day. Jem and Scout decides on making a snowman, transferring as much snow as possible from Miss Maudie's yard to their own. Since there isn't enough snow to make a snowman, Jem builds its shape roughly with dirt and covers them with snow. After it is completely presentable, it looks so much like Mr.Avery, who lives down the street Atticus demands them to disguise it. To make sure it is at least a little different, Jem places Miss Maudie's sunhat on the head and jams her hedge-clippers into the crook of its arm.
At night, Scout is abruptly waken up by Atticus to put her robes and coat on to go outside with him and Jem. After they are outside, they figure that Miss Maudie's house is on fire. All of the neighbours try their best to move her furnitures out to save them, and the fire truck arrives in order to prevent the fire spreading to other houses. For a moment, Mr. Avery is stuck by the window after pushing a mattress out, but he crosses the upstairs porch and safely gets out. However, despite all the effort, Miss Maudie's house helplessly burn downs to ashes. During all that happenings, at one point, someone drapes a blanket over Scout's shoulders which nobody notices. Atticus later questions about it but Scout has no idea who put it over her. Jem senses that Boo Radley did it, as they were standing infront of the Radley Place while all the mess was taking place. So Jem lets out everything to Atticus, starting from the knothole, the presents, the pants and all. Atticus gently says to keep it to themselves, when Scout nearly throws up imagining Boo standing just behind her. Jem claims if Scout have just turned around, she could have seen him.
Oddly, Miss Maudie is joyful the next day she has lost her house, which surprises Jem and Scout. She announces how much she hated the old cow barn and was even thinking of setting it on fire herself, that she always wanted a smaller house and how she will have so much more room for her azaleas now. Miss Maudie was blissful to say that she will build a little house and plant a larger garden, and after all that, she will have the finest yard in Alabama. She also mentions how she would have liked to be with Scout when Boo was putting the blanket on her to turn around and catch him during his act.
